Robowar

A group of commandos heads into the jungles of Venezuela on a highly classified mission and encounters a robotic killing machine.

Barely a year after Arnold Schwarzenegger fought an extraterrestrial hunter in Predator, legendary Italian exploitation duo Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso looked at the box office receipts and decided they could remake it in a Philippine swamp for the cost of a used moped. The result is Robowar (1988), a gloriously shameless B-movie mashup of Predator and RoboCop that replaces Stan Winston’s iconic creature design with a guy wearing hardware-store castoffs and trades Arnold’s deadpan charisma for the supersonic, vein-popping vocal cords of B-movie legend Reb Brown.

The plot follows an elite military commando squad dubbed “BAM” who are sent deep into the jungle to recover top-secret data, only to be systematically hunted by “Omega 1″—a rogue military cyborg that looks like a paintball enthusiast wrapped in motocross padding and ribbed dryer-vent tubing. Naturally, half the runtime is dedicated to heavily armed men walking in single file, staring grimly at muddy footprints, and emptying tens of thousands of blank rounds into completely defenseless foliage whenever a twig snaps. To sell the cybernetic horror, the film periodically cuts to “Robo-Vision,” treating the audience to a neon-green, 8-bit Commodore 64 wireframe grid accompanied by a voice filter that makes the killer robot sound like an angry microwave.

What truly elevates Robowar into the pantheon of elite party cinema is Reb Brown’s complete refusal to deliver a quiet line. Every grenade explosion, comrade death, and sudden breeze is met with Brown hip-firing an assault rifle and unleashing a guttural, window-shattering “YAAAAAAAUUURRGGHHH!” that makes you suspect the cyborg is just hunting the squad for some peace and quiet. Combined with an endlessly looping synth soundtrack and delightfully unhinged English dubbing, Robowar fails every standard rule of conventional filmmaking so enthusiastically that it becomes a five-star masterpiece of jungle schlock.
